Takeshi KAMIYOSHI's exhibition

Harvest

The Tonle Sap, which lies in the middle of Cambodia is the largest lake in Southeast Asia. It is 2450 square kilometers in area which is 3.7 times as large as Lake Biwa, and it becomes several times larger in the rainy season. It breeds a lot of small fish. There is a road which connects Siem Reap, the city of remains, to Tonle Sap. A line of light emerges before dawn. It is a stream of people on motorcycles who go to buy fish. They buy 20 kilograms of fish for several tens of yen. Not only this lake but the remains of Bayon are surrounded by shallow canals in the rainy season. Fish swim in them even though they dry up in the dry season. It seems to me that where there is water, there is fish. People catch them in many ways.
Khmerian culture is said to be a culture of water. It was able to build a large reservoir which spreaded eight kilometers from east to west and two kilome ters from north to south in the 11th century. This water must have been utilized for agriculture.
At dusk, lamps in the houses in Tonle Sap are lighted. When children gathered on the road side, the TV was turned on and an American animation began. It was like seeing Japanese life of several decades ago.
